The landscape and vegetation are transformed as you get closer to the coast: the vineyards and olive groves give way to the trees of Argan. Along the way there are small urban clusters, places of commercial exchanges. Passing Chichaoua, first a straight, then a curve, again a straight and suddenly the ocean. From the hills surrounding the city of Essaouira you can admire the bay in which it lies. Upon arrival, the ancient city (medina) welcomes with the high walls worn by the salt and wind. You can walk peacefully inside the medina, where getting lost is as easy as finding yourself. The white alleys with blue doors, the picturesque corners, the architectural elements characteristic of Portuguese architecture, the walls with the ramparts set among the jagged rocks and beaten by the ocean waves: everything is pleasant and surprising and immersed in a serene and suggestive atmosphere . By letting yourself be guided by the numerous seagulls you can reach the port area. From here you can admire, in all its extension, the beach on which the city overlooks. Return to Marrakech in the afternoon.

From the plain the road gently climbs theHigh Atlas up to the step ofTizi-n-Tichka at 2260m above sea level. Villages and places of trade are the backdrop to typical scenes of life in the country. The landscape changes quickly and the variety of colors and rocky conformations makes the journey fun and stimulating.
From the pass the road descends towards the Ksar di Ait Ben Haddou, a magnificent example of fortified architecture included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1987. From a panoramic point the Ksar shows itself in all its compactness, lying on a sandstone hill on the river bank Onila. Leave your car and go through the new village to the foot of the ancient fortified settlement. A maze of narrow streets, between kasbahs decorated with geometric patterns and arches engraved in clay, will lead you to the top of the hill, to the ancient barn, a last time outpost to defend in case of attack. After the visit, the car is taken back and, crossing still incredibly different landscapes, we return to Marrakech. Arrival in the city in the late afternoon.

Marrakech – Asni- Marrakech

The road to reach Asni climbs towards the mountains of the High Atlasbetween enchanting landscapes, valleys and plateaus. In the contrast between the red of the earth, the green of the vegetation and the blue of the sky we observe the unfolding of everyday life in Berber villages. Their architectures in pisè (plaster made with straw and clay mud) follow one another in the valley and one has the impression that time has stopped in these places. Crossing the Gorges of Rherhaia you come to Asni, the small Berber village located at 1150m above sea level dominated by Jebel Toubkal (4160m), the highest peak in North Africa. Every Saturday there is a market and the streets are teeming with fruit and vegetable vendors, pets and donkeys. Guests of a Berber family will participate in the tea ritual before resuming the road which, continuing along the north side of the Jebel Toubkal, reaches the village of Setti Fatma. After a stop, we set off again in the direction of Marrakech, crossing the Ourika valley and following the homonymous Oued (river). Return to Marrakech in the afternoon.

Arriving at the village of Ouzoud, located at 1500m above sea level, you leave the car to continue on foot on a walk that runs along the highest waterfalls of North Africa: the Ouzoud river plunges for 110m bouncing on a series of rocky frames up to the canyon of the river el-Abid. Going along the path you arrive under the big jump; here you can continue the walk along the Oued or relax on its banks. Another path takes you back to offering scenic spots of great effect. Return to Marrakech in the afternoon.

Crossing a patchwork of cultivated fields you arrive at the village of Tnine de l’Ourika where the most important souk of the valley takes place on Monday. Surrounded by spectacular and colorful landscapes and crossing the everyday life of the Berber villages of red earth nestled on the slopes of the mountains, you skirt Oued Ourika, where water is abundant all year round; poplars and weeping willows shade the banks and, from February to April, almond trees and cherry trees in bloom fill the landscape. At the village of Setti Fatma the road ends and from here, if desired, we start for a walk of about 2 hours immersed in nature, until we reach the waterfalls. In the early afternoon, we pick up the car and return to Marrakech.

Leaving the highway, a coastal avenue lined with palm trees announces the arrival at El Jadida, in the modern part of the city.
On the Mohammed ben Abdallah square a door opens into the thick ocher-colored walls that enclose the citadel from the 16th century; inside a compact labyrinth of alleys run through Portuguese architecture. The ramparts and walls protect and surround the medina and a walk on the fortifications offers suggestive panoramas.
Do not miss the underground cistern where the magic of the reflection of the water duplicates a space made of cross vaults and columns.

Traveling south-west, the urban landscape gradually gives way to the rural one until it becomes the “stone desert”. The shape of the soil recalls the shape of the sand dunes and the jagged profile of the High Atlas it forms the backdrop to an arid immensity that sometimes hides small oases and which in the spring is softened by the flowering of wild flowers. On the way back we pass through the lake of Lalla Takerkoust.

The jagged profile of the Jebel Toubkal (4160m), lthe highest peak in North Africa, it stands out towards the south. The road crosses the High Atlas; typical landscapes characterized by strong color contrasts and the Berber villages of red earth integrated and almost camouflaged in the territory accompany along the journey. You reach Imlil at 1740 meters above sea level. The small village surrounded by nuts and fruit trees and snow-capped peaks during the winter months is located in the valley of Mizane at the foot of the Toubkal.
Returning in the direction of Moulay Brahim continue towards the plateau of Kik in a succession of cultivated valleys until reaching the lake of Lalla Takerkoust.

They meet and cross villages and places of commercial exchanges, witnessing scenes of everyday life typical of the country. Leaving the High Atlas behind you arrive in Ouarzazate, at the crossroads of the Draa Valley and Dades and at 1160m above sea level. Founded in the 1920s as the headquarters of a garrison of the Foreign Legion, Ouarzazate preserves the Kasbah of Taourirt , an ancient residence of the Glaoui family, whose construction began in the 18th century. High earthen walls and towers conceal painted stucco rooms and brightly colored wooden ceilings.
After the visit of the kasbah we go back in the direction of the Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, a magnificent example of fortified architecture included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987.
From the new village you arrive at the foot of the ancient fortified settlement: a maze of narrow streets, between kasbahs decorated with geometric patterns and arches carved in clay.
Taking the car and going through still incredibly different landscapes, we return to Marrakech. Arrival in the city in the late afternoon.

During the winter season (January-March) in the village it is possible to rent equipment and book ski lessons and then have fun on the snow-covered slopes that extend on the slopes of the mountain of the same name, or simply take the chair lift and enjoy the splendid panorama. Nature is the protagonist. Oukaimeden is a good starting point for summer walking tours. Fans of travel back in time will be able to explore the rock carvings dating back to the Bronze Age that are located in the surroundings. Return to Marrakech in the late afternoon.
